About us

Why this site ?

Until about two years ago the domain extension .COM was the main generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) people could use for their domain names for a long time. That is ofcourse besides all the country-code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) names that could be used locally. The only real alternatives for mondial use that were offered during that period were .NET, .ORG and .INFO.

As we all know it became more and more difficult to pick up a new domain name that was not only premium, but also would let potential visitors know what the site had to offer them. This is one of the reasons why the ICANN finally decided to fully open the market. As a result lots of new gTLD’s were released, for example .XYZ, .TOP, .CLUB, TECH  and .ONLINE. At the moment there are almost thousand (!) new gTLD’s (https://ntldstats.com/tld).

The reason why we picked specifically those five extensions for example is that they are the first five new gTLD’s ranked on the ‘Most popular websites’ list of the world-famous Alexa Ranking List (http://www.rankevo.com/en/top-websites/top-level-domains/today).

To put things in the right perspective here are some important facts on those five gTLD’s (2016-05-20):

  • .Xyz started at 2014-03-14. There are 2.167 websites listed at Alexa Ranking at the moment, and the website with the highest rank is listed at number 6.202.
  • .Top started at 2014-11-16. There are 1.498 websites listed at Alexa Ranking at the moment, and the website with the highest rank is listed at number 22.721.
  • .Club started at 2014-2-25. There are 902 websites listed at Alexa Ranking at the moment, and the website with the highest rank is listed at number 1.420.
  • .Tech started at 2015-4-21. There are 599 websites listed at Alexa Ranking at the moment, and the website with the highest rank is listed at number 16.697.
  • .Online started at 2015-8-26. There are 521 websites listed at Alexa Ranking at the moment, and the website with the highest rank is listed at number 3.658.

What is remarkable is that .Online started the most recently, but is with a score of 3.658 already on the second place regarding the website with the highest Alexa Ranking. Besides that taking into consideration the date it started, the total of websites listed at Alexa Ranking at the moment is relative higher than .Tech and .Club, and about equals .Top and .Xyz.

Besides the fact that the prospects of .Online are therefore really good, we also find the way .Online sounds with many domain names very nice.

That’s why we would like to let people know that there are really good alternatives to the old .Com, .Net, .Org and .Info domination, where people also should consider the fact that lots of domain names simply don’t make a lot of sense with some of the ‘old extensions’, especially .Org and .Info that are for instance very difficult to link to commercial activities.

But also the herefore mentioned new gTLD’s aren’t equally valid to be combined with most of the (premium) domain names, especially .Club and to a lesser extent .Tech. Ofcourse they sound very well with the domain names they were especially developed for, but at the same time they’re quite useless for most of the other domain names. Whereas the ‘fantasy’ extensions .Xyz and .Top could theoretically be combined with most domain names, although they don’t offer any useful addition to the meaning of the domain name. On the other hand .Online actually emphasizes that the ‘business’ related to the domain name concerns in fact the Internet. It’s true that in some cases that’s quite redundant, but then .Online operates in the same way as .Xyz and .Top. But at the other hand there are also many domain names where the extension .Online really fits in very well, for instance for ‘brick and mortar stores’ who want to differentiate their offerings online, or for other companies that want to emphasize their presence on the web. Don’t forget there are many domain names in use with the ‘old extensions’ .Com, .Net, .Org and .Info, that are already combined with the word ‘online’, where users found it important to emphasize their presence on the Internet.

As we also like to point out there are already quite some .Online developed websites that we think are quite nice to look at, as you can see on the Portfolio’s we added to this website. That’s why we would appreciate if you would let us know about other nice looking .Online developed sites. Ofcourse they don’t have to be listed on Alexa Ranking, every nice looking site is welcome. You can send them directly at the tab page .Online Developed Domains.
